Coffee Farming
The Coffee Farming Project at Obumwe Conservation Village is more than agriculture—it is a story of resilience, sustainability, and community pride. With the fertile soils and cool climate of the Bukunga Hills, Obumwe is perfectly positioned to grow high-quality Arabica coffee. By harnessing this potential, we are creating new livelihoods, promoting environmental conservation, and sharing Uganda’s coffee heritage with the world.
Cultivating Coffee with Care
Our farmers are trained in every stage of sustainable coffee production—from nursery preparation and planting to pruning, harvesting, and post-harvest processing. Special emphasis is placed on organic practices such as composting, mulching, and shade-growing under indigenous trees. These techniques not only improve bean quality but also protect soil, conserve water, and restore biodiversity in the Bukunga Hills. Coffee is grown as part of a larger conservation strategy, ensuring that farming and nature work hand in hand.
Economic Empowerment
Coffee farming is a vital source of income for many families in Obumwe. By joining cooperatives and receiving training in marketing and value addition, farmers are able to access better markets and earn fairer prices. Profits from coffee sales are used to support households—covering school fees, healthcare, and basic needs—strengthening the entire community. For many, coffee has become more than a crop; it is a pathway to self-reliance and dignity.
Strengthening Community & Identity
Coffee is also a unifying force. It brings families together during harvest season and connects the Bukunga community to international markets and visitors. Through this project, local farmers gain confidence in their heritage and pride in producing something that reaches beyond their village. By preserving traditional methods while embracing modern training, Obumwe positions coffee as both an economic driver and a cultural treasure.
