About Us

About Us

Travel With Purpose, Leave a Legacy. Discover. Connect.

Obumwe Conservation Village CBO is a community-based organization (CBO) duly registered under Uganda’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.

Located in the Bukunga Hills of Kanungu District, near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and only a short distance from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Obumwe is a living model of unity, conservation, and community empowerment.

The name Obumwe means “Unity”—a reflection of our mission to bring people together through environmental restoration, cultural preservation, and sustainable livelihoods.

Our Story

The Bukunga Hills were once heavily degraded, scarred by landslides, soil erosion, and crop destruction. Communities were divided, and the environment suffered.

In response, Africa Runners Company Limited (ARC)—a leading tour operator with roots in Kanungu—founded Obumwe as part of its corporate social responsibility, giving back to the community. Through tree planting, conservation farming, and cultural revitalization, the land has been restored: forests are returning, biodiversity is thriving, and the community is united once again.

Today, Obumwe welcomes researchers, students, travelers, and development partners to experience a model of how conservation and culture can drive sustainable growth.
