Winery and Distillation

The Winery and Distillation Project at Obumwe Conservation Village is more than just beverage production—it is a celebration of culture, heritage, and innovation. In the Bukunga Hills, traditional brewing has long been part of community life, from festive gatherings to family ceremonies. By reviving and refining these practices, we are not only preserving cultural identity but also creating sustainable livelihoods for local families.

Reviving Tradition with Modern Skills

Our community members are trained in fermentation, distillation, and quality control techniques, ensuring that every bottle produced meets high standards while staying true to its cultural roots. Bananas (matoke), a staple crop in the region, are transformed into banana wine and waragi (a locally distilled spirit), while other fruits are being introduced to diversify production. By blending traditional recipes with modern training, we create unique beverages that are both authentic and market-ready.

Economic Empowerment

This project provides an important source of income for farmers and women-led groups who supply the raw materials. Bananas that might otherwise go to waste are now given new value, reducing post-harvest losses and boosting farmer incomes. For many families, the proceeds from beverage sales help cover school fees, medical expenses, and household needs, making the project a vital part of the local economy.

Community Pride and Cultural Exchange

Beyond economics, the winery and distillation project strengthens cultural pride. Brewing has always been a way of bringing people together, and now it has become a platform for showcasing Obumwe’s heritage to the world. Visitors are welcome to see and experience how local brews are crafted, offering an authentic cultural exchange. By participating in this process, guests gain insight into the values, traditions, and stories behind every sip.

These experiences are not only enjoyable but also educational, connecting visitors directly to the sustainable and cultural dimensions of local brewing.

Our Vision

Through this project, Obumwe Conservation Village is transforming a cultural tradition into a tool for economic growth, conservation, and social unity. By adding value to local crops, we reduce waste, create jobs, and attract tourism. By training the next generation in sustainable brewing practices, we ensure that these skills and traditions continue to thrive.

Grace, a mother of four from Bukunga, once relied solely on subsistence farming, barely producing enough to feed her family. Through Obumwe’s women empowerment workshops, she learned modern farming techniques, bookkeeping, and savings group management.
