Banana Farming
Banana farming is a cornerstone of life and livelihood in the Bukunga Hills, and at Obumwe Conservation Village it plays an even deeper role—as both a source of nutrition and a driver of sustainable development. Bananas (matoke), a staple food in Uganda, are not only central to family meals but also serve as a major cash crop that sustains household incomes.
What We Do
Our banana farming project is designed to transform traditional farming into a sustainable and profitable venture. We focus on:
Why It Matters
The project contributes directly to food security, as every family can rely on bananas for daily meals, while also generating income to pay for school fees, healthcare, and household needs. Beyond farming, bananas connect to Obumwe’s broader initiatives—supporting our winery and distillation project, cultural celebrations, and community meals like goat roasts accompanied by steamed matoke.
Banana cultivation also has an environmental impact: planted on terraces across Bukunga’s steep hillsides, banana groves help prevent soil erosion, stabilize slopes, and restore greenery in areas once devastated by deforestation and landslides.
Visitor Experience
Visitors to Obumwe are invited to meet and learn from these inspiring women. You can:
Many visitors leave not just as observers but as allies and supporters, inspired by the resilience and creativity of Obumwe’s women.
Our Vision
By supporting women, we are investing in the future of Obumwe Conservation Village—a future where women and men work side by side, where girls have equal opportunities, and where sustainable development is driven by the strength of all.
👉 Visitors can join farmers in the fields, experience the entire cultivation process from planting to harvesting, and enjoy traditional Ugandan banana dishes such as matoke, banana pancakes, and fresh banana juice. Many also get to see how bananas are turned into local brews, making this project both educational and deliciously immersive.
