Piggery Farming
The Piggery Farming Project at Obumwe Conservation Village was introduced by Dr. Ono as a practical solution to improve food security, nutrition, and income generation for local families. Pigs are resilient animals that require relatively little space yet provide a significant return on investment, making them an ideal entry point for rural women and smallholder farmers.
A Model of Shared Investment
What makes this project unique is its shared investment model. Each woman contributes 40% of the initial cost, while the remaining 60% is supported through the project. This approach ensures that women feel a genuine sense of ownership while lowering financial barriers to participation. By giving women “skin in the game,” we encourage accountability and long-term commitment, making the project both inclusive and sustainable.
Training & Best Practices
Farmers are equipped with modern animal husbandry skills, including:
This hands-on training transforms pig farming from a risky activity into a well-structured agribusiness opportunity.
Beyond Income: Environmental Benefits
The benefits of piggery farming extend beyond household income. Pig waste is collected and used as organic fertilizer, reducing dependence on chemical inputs and enriching the soil for crop production. This practice closes the loop between livestock farming and sustainable agriculture, aligning with Obumwe’s wider goals of environmental restoration.
Community Impact
The project has already shown a ripple effect:
This initiative has also fostered unity and solidarity within the village, reflecting the very meaning of Obumwe—working together for shared progress.

Our Vision
Through the piggery farming project, Obumwe Conservation Village demonstrates how innovation, partnership, and community ownership can transform livelihoods. By empowering women with resources and training, we are not just raising pigs—we are raising hope, resilience, and opportunity for the entire community.
👉 At Obumwe, even small projects carry big impacts. One pig today can mean school fees tomorrow, healthier meals next week, and a stronger community for years to come.
